2012 WSOD Events 2 and 3

On December 28th, we held events 2 and 3 of the 2012 World Series of Dip.  It was the first time that we held 2 events in one night and as is usually the case we had petting zoo of donkeys and fish turn out for the chance to win a highly coveted bracelet.

Event 2 was Pot Limit Omaha and even though we play PLO exactly once a year, we had 17 players slap down their christmas money for a shot at the big time.

Previous WSOD winners of PLO are a veritable who's who within Winnipeg's poker community;

Chris "Brain" Kramp
"7 Nation Army" Suba
Clayton "Funk" Schneider
Lemon (In the first incarnation of the WSOD Cold deck Classic which was basically a 1 hour PLO cash game)

Even with 3 of those players present, Andy Bloch came out of nowhere to chew up the competition like he was a mama bird feeding his babies.

Event 2 - 2012 WSOD PLO winner - Andy Bloch
 Interestingly, Andy has a doppelganger in the poker community also named Andy Bloch;

I have a whole section called Separated at Birth that even includes our other Andy Bloch look-a-like!  Strangely Andy Bloch met Andy Bloch in Vegas.  Our Andy came around the corner (of the pros only free food area - I guess they believed he was Andy Bloch) and almost bumped into rich Andy.  It went like this;

Our Andy  "Woah, sorry...Hey you are Andy Bloch"
Rich Andy  "Woah, we could be related"
Our Andy  "ha ha ha"
Rich Andy  "You are like my much shorter cousin!"
Our Andy  "Nice hoagie"
Rich Andy ' Um, thanks?"
Our Andy  "Can I have a bite?
Rich Andy  "There's more in there" (points to the lounge) "Just tell them you are me, ha ha ha"
Our Andy  "Is holding hands out of the question?"

My recollections of the exchange are vague, but it went something like that.

As the first players were knocked out, I had to bring out the '70's bridge table for a side cash game...  We called it the kid's table.

The second tournament of the night was No Limit Hold Em with rebuys and an add on.  The rebuy period was only 1 hour long but generated 37 rebuys from the 18 players!  In the end Ken Chin redeemed the Asian contingent's lacklustre PLO performance by sinching up the bootstraps and laying a licking on anyone who dared cross him.

Event 3 - 2012 WSOD No Limit Hold Em with Rebuys and an Add On winner - Ken Chin
The night was capped off with a cash game that ran until 6:30 in the morning.  For those of you who base their schedules on McDonald's like Hitchcock - it was long into the breakfast menu and way past the wishful thinking of a sack of double cheeseburgers.

For all WSOD winners including those listed above, check out the World Series of Dip tab at the top of the page.

Separated at Birth; Lemon vs Alan from The Hangover (Zach Galifianakis)

LEMON vs ALAN from THE HANGOVER

One of regulars submitted this next edition of "separated at birth".

OK, it was Lemon.

Lemon vs Alan from The Hangover

Many of you have witnessed Lemon's attempted re-creation of parts of The Hangover.  If there was a poker edition of the franchise, I do believe that the lone wolf, Alan, played by Zach Galifianakis would end up asking "How do you want me to play that?  I'm just not good enough to lay that down".

Pass The Dip presents a bobble-head edition of Separated at Birth.  Do they look alike?  Just nod your head over and over and over and over and over.....

Separated at Birth; Tom "Durrrr" Dwan vs Mr. Spock

TOM "DURRRR" DWAN vs MR. SPOCK

In case you are a non-believer, check out the following Mr. Spock quotes and you just might see Tom Dwan in them somewhere.  Besides you've never seen them in the same room have you, they just might be the same person...

Spock: Difficult to be precise, Captain. I should say approximately seven thousand eight hundred twenty four point seven to one.
Spock: Random chance seems to have operated in our favour.
Spock: Without facts, the decision cannot be made logically. You must rely on your human intuition.
Spock: Captain, you almost make me believe in luck.
Spock: I made an error in my computations.

Separated at Birth; Dandy Bloch and Andy Bloch

DANDY BLOCH vs ANDY BLOCH
Dandy Bloch
Andy Bloch
Remarkable n'est pas?

So the first time Dandy walked into my poker den, he took one look at the picture we had up of Andy Bloch "The Patron Saint of Passing The Dip".  He didn't know anyone except X and he turned to the group and said, "Hey this guy looks just like me!"  It is sick how right he is!  He's now played with us for years and I think his name is Dan, which makes the Dan part of Dandy Bloch make sense.  I can't be sure though, and I know that in some perverse way, nobody wants to know his real name.  It would ruin the mystique.

Strangely, we have another player in our game that is named Andy Bloch who also looks like "The Patron Saint of Passing the Dip".  He comes from time to time and nobody know his real name.  It might be Chris, I'm not sure.  I have no picture of Andy but when he plays again, I will post it here.

As far as the real Andy Bloch (you remember, "The Patron Saint of Passing the Dip") goes, we have many stories yet to tell about our paths crossing with the friendly poker pro - it'll be worth the wait.

To summarize - We have a poker pro we regularly see named Andy Bloch and we also have 2 poker players in our game named Andy Bloch and Dandy Bloch.  So awesome!

Separated at Birth; Matchstick vs Montgomery Burns

Can you spot the 5 differences between these two pictures?

Ward AKA Matchstick...or is it?
I think this is Montgomery Burns because of the tie.

If you are trying to figure out which picture is of Ward-O, it really is  tough one.  I'm not sure which is which.  They both have recognizable foreheads, they both clasp their hands and they are both cartoonish.  I think to really figure this out we might have to call in the one person who can tell the difference between these twins...

Waylon Smithers!

Detective Smithers at your service!
Well it looks like Smithers has done it!  And it seems as though he is taking him home so Mr. Burns won't fraternize with other men...
Come along sir, that isn't the type of man you should be hanging around with...

OMG - How Did I Forget the Cheeseburger? AKA Separated At Birth

I posted a poll yesterday where you can vote on your favourite Pass The Dip player nicknames.  It could have been the whisky, it might have been the gin, it could have been the 3 or 4 six-packs I don't know but look at the name I forgot...

Ryan "Cheeseburger" Huston

This is a common pose for Ryan.

This is also a common pose for Ryan

As Nat X would say "That was a bogey!"

For those that have not seen Cheeseburger in action - he plays just like a cheeseburger.  You will say to yourself, "Self, that is ridiculous, cheeseburgers don't have a particular way of playing poker."  Then one day you will come to a game where Ryan shows up and you will realize that you can't picture a cheeseburger playing poker any other way!

Now go to the poll and pick your other favourites!

Pass The Dip On The Road / Separated at Birth?

Thank you to Michael Smith and his friends who had a couple of us out to his place for a tournament last night.  He is friends with Lemon who extended the invite to a few of us for the 30 man tournament.

Here's how it all went down;

Co Bra got snapped off early after the re-buy period.  I didn't see him play a single hand, but I'll bet there was a coin involved.

When I went to check on Kramp who was playing on a table in another room, he seemed to be doing well.  So in the spirit of the game I put a 10 dollar bounty on his head that he had to keep as part of his stack.  Despite this, he managed to build a monster stack after the re-buys were done.  "Oh yeah, this is all because I'm a luck sack" he responded when I asked how he got all the chips.  Then with a big stack and closing in on the final table, he played his 10s too aggressively and dumped almost the whole thing to a guy who was check-calling.  He was soon out in 13th or 14th, knocked out by Lemon.

I was the next out.  I had developed a good stack before the re-buys were over and then I had bad seat draws and got nothing.  By the time we hit the final table, I was dwindling in chips and drew the worst seat at the table.  The biggest stacks were 2  and 3 to my left and Lemon with the next biggest and the most aggressive game was to my right.  I was trapped into playing only real hands with no option for stealing.  On my last hand my KQ got called by K7 suited pre-flop, but the river spiked the dude a club and I was out in 5th - at least it was in the money!

Lemon has hit in the face with the deck early, creating a "table of death" as player after player was placed at our table  only to be eliminated after a few hands.  The other tables had 2 players total eliminated before the re-buy, while our table alone eliminated 7!  On one hand Lemon eliminated 2 players at once with his well-played aces.  Despite his problem remembering chip values, he played well and made it all the way to heads up before getting eliminated in 2nd place.

Mike and a few of the players there extended invitations to future tournaments.

Again thanks Mike for the invite!  We will be back!

And lastly..

SEPARATED AT BIRTH???

Russell Hantz - 2nd place at Survivor: Samoa

Michael Lemon - 2nd place at surviving the tournament;  Smith's house
(By the way this is the "collecting the bounty" shot after Lemon eliminated Kramp - hahaha)
